Cowboy Chic Copper Running Horse Display Shelves
Nothing says Cowboy Chic more than running horses. And there is no better way to incorporate this motif into your décor than with these simple copper running horse display shelves, perfect for a front entryway or hallway!
For this craft, you will need:
– Plain wooden, crown molding wall shelf
– American Accents® Designer Paint, in Soft Wheat
– American Accents® Designer Primer
– American Accents® Designer Metallic Paint, in Copper
– American Accents® Designer Matte Clear Coat
– 1/4″ craft wood
– Running horse stencil template
– Gorrilla Glue®, or any other glue that will adhere wood
– Small paintbrush
– Small knife
– Soft cloth
Start by covering your workspace in newspaper to prevent any overspray from the paint. Lightly sand the shelf with medium grit sandpaper, and remove any dust with a soft cloth.
Coat the entire wooden shelf with one coat of American Accents® Designer Primer. After the primer has dried, apply American Accents® Designer Paint in Soft Wheat. Allow the shelf to dry fully before applying a second coat, and allowing that paint to set completely as well. Apply one coat of American Accents® Designer Matte Clear Coat to the shelf and let it dry.
With a pencil and your running horse stencil, trace the design lightly and accurately onto the craft wood. Repeat this step four or five times until you have enough wooden shapes to go across the shelf base. Cut out each shape with a jigsaw and set aside. (Note: Use extreme caution when using power tools such as jigsaws. Safety first, always!)
Coat each of the horse shapes with American Accents® Designer Paint in Soft Wheat. After the paint has dried, apply two coats of American Accents® Designer Metallic Paint in Copper. With a small knife, chip some of the paint off the running horse shape for a worn, distressed look. Coat each of the wooden shapes with one coat of American Accents® Designer Matte Clear and allow them to dry.
With a small paintbrush, apply Gorrilla Glue® to the backs of each of the running horse cutouts. Carefully press each wooden shape to the shelf itself. Clamp each one gently to the shelf, and wipe off any excess glue with a soft cloth. Allow the glue to set for two hours or until completely secure before removing the clamps and hanging on the wall for use.
